For our film opening, we decided to do horror films for a couple reasons. Horror films are captivating, suspenseful and there are many ways to add creative twists to horror. For many years I disliked horror movies because they gave me nightmares, but recently I have found a new appreciation for horror films. The directors use of combinations of camera angles, lighting, transitions, amongst other filming techniques, to get the best reaction from their audience. Their well thought out/well executed scare scenes are used to make the movie more captivating and suspenseful. I believe that in doing a horror film opening, my group and I will be able to showcase our skills and knowledge that we gained from the class the best. I also believe that it will be fun to see if we can come up with well thought out ways to scare our audience, and also it will be fun to see if we can execute such a difficult and intricate genre.
Some examples of horror films that have inspired me to choose horror as my genre include "The Shining" and "It". Both of these films are interesting because there are original versions and new versions. The original version of "The Shining" was made in 1980, to where the sequel version, "Doctor Sleep", came out in 2019. In comparison, The original "It" was made in 1990 and the remade version came out in 2017. Moreover, a sequel, "It Chapter 2" was also made in 2019. With this being said, it is interesting to compare the movies made in the late 1900's to the movies made in the present day. A lot of the costumes, camera quality, and scare tactics have changed; however, directors continue to use some of the same camera angles, transitions and lighting as they did in the early ages of horror films. Even though the earlier films executions are not as heart stopping as the films now a day, they still tend to create similar effects in the audience. With the advancement of technology, film directors have been able to make horror films more realistic, adding an even scarier aspect to the films.
With all of this in mind, my group and I will use common techniques found in horror films to make our opening seem as professional as possible. One thing that I have noticed about horror films is their overall idea, which is shared amongst almost every horror movie. The innocent gets caught in a situation and must overcome the problem. However, they then face a science fictional, supernatural, or overly indulgent character who makes the character's situation even worse. After a couple deaths and heart stopping scenes, the character(s) come together to defeat their monster, and eventually get out of the situation mentally scared for life. Even though my group and I will only be making a film opening, we will also need to focus on foreshadowing these turn in events in order to captivate our audience and make the story more suspenseful, much like many horror films do.
