5 Master Shots With Sound

Direct Sound: In my simultaneity clips, I use the direct sound. I did not add any sounds to the clips, but instead, I kept it the same. Therefore, everything the audience hears is the original sound. This shows the difference between the noisy classrooms and the silent hallways. I also used this technique in the toilet clips. The original sound of  the toilet flushing can be heard faintly in the background. These are  examples of diegetic sound because the characters can hear the same things the audience hears.

Voice Over: I used  a voice over of a cheerleader chanting a Lely High School cheer in my symbolism clip. This allows the audience to see how the Trojans symbolize Lely and emphasizes school spirit.

Post  Synchronization Dubbing: In my parallelism clip, I added in the sipping sounds while editing. These sounds were not part of the original clip. This helped the audience know we were both drinking. I also used post synchronization dubbing in my professional golfer clip. I found the sound of a golf club hitting the ball and added it and I also added in the applause from the crowd. Both of these emphasized the idea of it being a good hit. These sounds, although added later, are examples of diegetic sounds because the audience and the characters can hear them.

Music: In my example of Leit Motif, I added music to create chaos and high energy. In the clip I am being overwhelmed by schoolwork and information, the music adds to this chaos going on in my mind. It also repeats the same beat which eludes to the never ending schoolwork. This can be seen in between the scenes of a toilet flushing because all of the things I am learning are just being flushed down the toilet. This music is non-diegetic because the characters cannot hear it.

Offscreen Sound: Lastly, in my contrast clip of me mini golfing, I added the off screen sound of crickets chirping. The audience can assume that the crickets are in the same place as I am, however they do not directly affect me. This adds to the contrast in the overwhelming applause received by the professional golfer's great hit, and my weak attempt to putt-putt followed by silence and the distant sound of crickets chirping.

Madison Craumer Post Comment: In your example of Leitmotif, the voice overs and dubbing of John Cena's jingle made the scene very entertaining and funny. By knowing  what Astrid was thinking, I was able to understand her thoughts behind her actions which made it easy to follow and fun to watch.

  1. I really enjoyed your simultaneity clip. It really captured how the hallways are always so quiet and empty while in the same time, the classrooms are always filled with students and a lot of noise. They scenes worked very well together and did a good job of capturing the moments happening simultaneously.

  2. Your Leit Motif clip was really well put together. I enjoyed all the different sounds and how they show you’re quickly trying to get something done. The variety of sounds give off a hurried feeling and that’s exactly what your Leit Motif visually provides.

  3. I loved the sound effects in your contrast videos, especially the insects in the background of the second clip. The crickets added in the background after you barely hit the golf ball brought out the embarrassment of the weak hit (similar to the awkward pause after a bad joke).

  4. Your video stood out to me as I was looking for a video to comment on. The audio that was incorporated into this video puts it together and makes sense. My favorite shot was your symbolism edit because it already shows symbolism from the school that you go to and adding in the Lely cheer helps it define it more and shows school spirit.
