Agent Carter Practice Essay

While watching the clip of Agent Carter, many crucial aspects of film were presented. The use of sound, mise-en-scene, camera usage and editing techniques, made the clip of Agent Carter was very impactful. The production crew of this film was able to use these key features of filming to make the scenes not only exciting, but also enthralling. This is most impressive because it is hard to capture an audience's attention and get the emotionally connected in only 5 minutes.

Right off the bat, sound was used to get the viewer's attention and build intensity. The music added into the beginning created anticipation. This music is an example of non-diegetic sound because only the audience can hear the music. Music is also added into the scene where the boss is choosing which agent will go on the next assignment. This also builds anticipation because the audience wants Agent Carter to be chosen. When she is not choses, one of the main themes of the film is revealed: sexism. Moreover, synchronous sounds are used throughout the film to add action to certain scenes. For example, during the scene where Agent Carter is fighting the men, sounds are added to exaggerate the action going on and add excitement for the audience.

Elements of mise-en-scene are also used in this film to create the mood and setting. In the beginning, the two characters are shown wearing superhero costumes. This shows their importance and allows the audience to assume that their job is full of action and excitement. This is a contrast from the next scene which shows an ordinary, boring office space where Agent Carter's new job consists of paperwork rather than the action she's use to. Lighting is also used to create this boring environment in her new work space. The lighting is left dim to show that there is no excitement in the office and it is a very formal setting. The costumes and lighting in the clip also set the time period for this film, which is in the late 1960's or early 70's. Furthermore, the actor's blocking emphasizes the sexist work environment since Agent Carter is stuck in a dark, back corner desk away from everyone else.

Another factor of filming used is editing techniques. One editing technique that can be seen is a transitioning cut shot. This is an instant change from one shot to the next which can be seen in the beginning when it switches from Agent Carter to Steve. This not only shows both visual perspectives, but also their emotional perspectives and how connected they are to each other. This causes the audience to feel the depth of their relationship, making it a sad moment when Steve dies. After the scene when Steve dies, another transition shot is used to change the setting. This transition is called a fade because it fades from one scene to the next: this shows time passing. The contrast between her work areas is also an editing technique.

Lastly, camera shots, angels, movements and composition, are also used to increase the tension in each scene. One of the most noticeable shots used was an establishing shot of New York City. This shows the setting and allows the audience to have assume that in that big of a city there is a lot of crime. Another camera shot used is a chocker shot. This is used when Agent Carter answers the phone; consequently, this builds the intensity of the scene and causes the tension to build. Moreover, during the scene where Agent Carter is talking to the two men outside, over the shoulder shots are used to show both perspectives. This causes the audience to be more surprised when the fighting breaks out, making it less expected and more exciting.

Overall, this clip encompassed many techniques used in filming, causing it to be exciting and action-packed. The directors of this film were able to use different filming methods to maximize the viewers experience while watching this film. The ability to clearly communicate to the audience and portray many emotions throughout the film made this clip very entertaining and effective.
