Film Opening Research #1- Olympus Has Fallen

  • How many titles are displayed during the opening sequences to the film?
    • Two major titles: "Millennium Films Presents" and "Olympus Has Fallen."
    • One smaller title naming the location. 
  • What images are prioritized in the opening sequence?
    • The vast greenery and snow signifying isolation.
    • The two main characters .
  • What connotations do the images carry?
    • The President is off in the middle of nowhere training.
    • There is a special bond between the two characters.
  • How is genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset?
    • Action films often contain fighting and in the beginning the two main characters are boxing in order to practice stamina and self defense.
  • How does the film establish an enigma from the outset?
    • The viewer wants to know why they are boxing in a cabin in the middle of the woods.
  • What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?
    • They automatically cut to a fighting scene, even though it is just friendly practice it still foreshadows what is to come. 
  • How has technology been used effectively?  You might want to consider camera angles, transitions and editing techniques.
    • At first there is an establishing shot that shows they are in the middle of nowhere and raises suspicions as to what they are doing. 
    • While they are fighting there are close up shots of the two main characters faces in order to familiarize the audience with the characters and build intensity.
